How to Choose
Jadeite Properly

Most people begin with price. That is usually the first mistake. Jadeite is chosen by understanding colour, translucency, texture, proportion and presence — then price begins to make sense.

Quick Answer

How should you choose jadeite?

Choose jadeite by looking at colour, translucency, texture, proportion, treatment and how it behaves under different light. Price matters, of course, but it should come after understanding what you are actually seeing.

Fine jadeite is not just “green stone”. It is a mineral with structure, density, light response and personality. Rather inconveniently for quick shoppers, it refuses to be judged properly in three seconds.

At Ixchell Jewellery Singapore, we encourage clients to learn first, view slowly and choose only when the piece feels clear, suitable and quietly right.

Factor One

Colour

Colour includes hue, tone and saturation. A stronger colour is not always better if it feels flat, uneven or too harsh. Balance matters.

Factor Two

Translucency

Translucency describes how light enters and returns through jadeite. It gives fine jadeite its watery, icy or glowing appearance.

Factor Three

Texture

Texture refers to the grain and internal structure. Fine texture usually gives jadeite a smoother, more refined visual presence.

Factor Four

Proportion

Size, thickness, curve and shape determine how the piece sits on the body. A beautiful piece still needs to feel right on you.

Colour

Do not choose jadeite by colour alone.

Colour is usually the first thing people notice, but it should not be the only thing they judge. Jadeite colour can be green, lavender, icy white, yellow, grey, black or mixed across the same piece.

In gemological terms, colour is usually considered through hue, tone and saturation. In human English: what colour it is, how light or dark it feels, and how strong that colour appears.

A jadeite piece with gentle colour but fine translucency and pleasing texture may feel more elegant than a louder piece with poor structure. Luxury does not always shout. Quite often, it simply sits there looking expensive.

Translucency

Translucency is where jadeite begins to breathe.

Translucency means light can partly enter the jadeite instead of only bouncing from the surface. This is why fine jadeite can appear icy, watery, glowing or softly alive.

Jadeite typically has a refractive index around 1.66, which helps gemologists identify the mineral and explains how light bends inside the stone.

In simpler words, better jadeite often handles light beautifully. It may change from calm to luminous as you turn it. That is why photographs rarely tell the full story.

Texture

Texture is the quiet quality many beginners miss.

Texture refers to the internal grain and mineral structure of jadeite. Finer texture usually creates a smoother, more refined appearance, while coarser texture may look cloudier or more granular.

This is why two jadeite pieces of similar colour may feel completely different in person. One may look soft and luminous; the other may appear heavier, flatter or less refined.

Texture is not always obvious online, especially when photos are over-brightened. In person, however, the difference becomes far easier to recognise.

Proportion & Wearability

A jadeite piece must suit the person, not just the tray.

Proportion includes size, thickness, curve, setting and how the piece sits on the wearer. A jadeite bangle, ring, pendant or pair of earrings may look beautiful on display but feel very different on the body.

A bangle must pass the hand comfortably and rest properly on the wrist. A ring should suit the hand. Earrings should balance the face. A pendant should have the right visual weight.

This is where private viewing becomes useful. Jadeite is personal. The correct piece should not merely be attractive; it should belong.

Type A Matters

Always understand treatment before judging value.

Type A jadeite means natural jadeite that has not been dyed, acid-washed or resin-filled. It may be cut, carved and polished, but its natural internal structure remains intact.

Type B jadeite has been acid-treated and filled with resin. Type C jadeite has been dyed. These treatments can change appearance, stability and long-term value.

Before asking whether jadeite is “worth it”, ask whether it is natural Type A jadeite. Otherwise, the conversation begins from the wrong floor of the building.

Simple Choosing Framework

How to assess jadeite properly, without panic.

Factor What To Look For Why It Matters
Colour Hue, tone, saturation and balance. Colour attracts the eye, but balance decides elegance.
Translucency How light enters and moves through jadeite. Creates depth, glow and a more lively appearance.
Texture Fine, smooth internal grain. Better texture often gives a calmer, more refined look.
Proportion Shape, size, thickness and wearability. The piece must suit the wearer, not just the photograph.
Treatment Whether it is natural Type A or treated jadeite. Treatment affects value, stability and trust.

Why Photos Are Not Enough

Jadeite must be seen under real light.

Jadeite changes under daylight, warm indoor light, cool LED light and even against different skin tones. A piece may look bright in one setting and soft in another.

Phone cameras also adjust exposure, white balance and saturation automatically. This is why jadeite in photographs may look more dramatic, flatter or cooler than it appears in person.

Serious buyers view jadeite slowly. They turn it in light, compare pieces side by side and observe how it feels against the skin. Very old-fashioned. Very sensible.

Mindset

The right jadeite does not need to shout.

Do not rush jadeite. Some pieces are bold, some are subtle, some are meant for daily wear and some are meant to be kept for the next generation.

The correct piece often stays quietly in the mind after viewing. That is usually a better sign than instant excitement caused by lighting, price pressure or clever photography.

Your role is not to chase beauty blindly. Your role is to recognise quality, suitability and emotional fit when they meet in the same stone.

Jadeite is not merely bought. It is understood, chosen and eventually lived with.

View jadeite properly.

The best way to understand jadeite is to see it in person, under real light, with proper guidance and without pressure.
