The Lifestyle Guide

The physics of ownership. Learn the mechanical differences between classical silhouettes, the strict laws of knuckle sizing, and how human skin acts as a canvas.

The Architecture of Silhouettes

The Round Bangle

圓條 (Yuan Tiao) / 福鐲 (Fu Zhuo)

The oldest and most traditional silhouette. The bangle is perfectly cylindrical—round on the outside, round on the inside. Because of its massive thickness, it requires sacrificing a huge amount of the raw jadeite boulder, making it a highly premium cut.

The Aristocratic Roll

Because the inner surface is completely round, it does not sit flush against the skin. Instead, it rolls freely up and down the arm. Historically, aristocratic women favoured this because the constant rolling forced them to move their arms with slow, deliberate grace to avoid loud clanking.

The D-Shape

平安鐲 (Ping An Zhuo)

The modern standard. While the outside retains a beautiful curve, the inner surface is ground completely flat, creating a "D" shape cross-section.

This flat inner wall sits completely flush against the wrist. Ergonomically, this means the bangle stays securely in place without rolling, making it infinitely more comfortable and safe for the active, modern woman navigating the city.

The Oval / Guifei

貴妃鐲 (Gui Fei Zhuo)

An elliptical shape designed to perfectly match the natural oval anatomy of the human wrist. Because it contours so closely, it looks incredibly delicate and almost seems to merge with the arm.

The Consort's Dilemma

Named after Yang Guifei, one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. Legend dictates she loved jade but had gained weight, making standard round bangles uncomfortable. The imperial craftsmen invented the elliptical shape specifically to contour over her bones, creating a slimming optical illusion on the wrist.

The Physics of Sizing

The Knuckle Calculus

When buying a jade bangle, your actual wrist size is entirely irrelevant. Type A jadeite is a rigid microcrystalline aggregate—it possesses zero flex, give, or stretch.

The only measurement that matters is the widest span of your fully compressed hand (from the base knuckle of the index finger to the base knuckle of the pinky). The bangle must be sized to forcefully clear this bone structure. If a bangle slides on easily, it is too big, and you risk it flying off your wrist.

The Plastic Bag Rite of Passage

Because the fit must be incredibly exact to clear the knuckles safely, the physical friction of skin becomes a massive barrier.

Entering the world of jadeite requires the famous "Plastic Bag Method." By placing a thin, single-use plastic bag over the hand (and applying lotion or soap), the friction coefficient drops to near zero. This allows the rigid stone to glide safely over the compressed bone structure without causing bruising or getting permanently stuck.

Curator's Notes: Sizing & Fit FAQ

How do I measure my jade bangle size?

Do not measure your wrist. Compress your hand tightly and measure the widest point straight across your knuckles. This millimeter reading is the internal diameter required to clear your bones.

What is the difference between Round and D-Shape?

A Round (Yuan Tiao) bangle is cylindrical inside and out, prone to rolling on the wrist. A D-Shape (Ping An) has a flat inner surface, allowing it to sit completely flush against the skin for modern comfort.

Why use a plastic bag to put on a bangle?

A properly fitted jade bangle should be very tight going over the knuckles to prevent it from sliding off later. The plastic bag eliminates skin friction, allowing the stone to glide on safely.
