ROOM II

Ritual & Reality

Bridging ancient folklore with modern chemistry. We decode the mechanics of Feng Shui, the lipid absorption of the Living Stone, and the honorable repair of a shattered bangle.

Mythos & Metrics

Environmental Risk Management

風水 (Feng Shui)

Long before it became commercialized mysticism, Feng Shui was ancient China's architecture and risk management system. Wearing jadeite was an extension of this philosophy—creating a balanced, dense micro-environment on the body.

By wearing a naturally cold, incredibly dense stone (3.33 Specific Gravity), the wearer was forced to be physically grounded. It served as a tactile reminder to move with intention, avoiding reckless physical and financial decisions.

The Living Stone

人養玉,玉養人 (Ren Yang Yu, Yu Yang Ren)

The famous proverb translates to: "A person nourishes the jade, and the jade nourishes the person." This is not magic; it is structural chemistry.

Unlike a diamond, which is a single sealed crystal, Type A Burmese jadeite is an aggregate. It possesses microscopic porosity. When worn continuously, the stone slowly absorbs human skin lipids (oils) and ambient moisture. Over decades, this microscopic hydration acts as a natural polish, dramatically improving the stone's translucency and making its colors appear more vivid and "alive."

Repair & Reality

Closure & The Golden Renewal

擋災與金鑲玉 (Dang Zai & Jin Xiang Yu)

When a jadeite bangle shatters upon impact, traditional culture dictates it has performed its ultimate duty: Dang Zai (taking the disaster on your behalf). It absorbed the kinetic or spiritual impact meant for your body.

The Technical Scaffolding

You do not discard the protector. Master jewelers execute a mechanical rescue known as the Golden Renewal. As shown in the exhibit, this is not a simple glue job. 18k gold is used to craft articulated hinges (活動口/活結) that allow the rigid bangle to open and close. To secure the heavy stone, microscopic rivets (內部鉚釘) are drilled directly into the jadeite segments, locking the gold framework deep into the microcrystalline structure. The fracture is honored, and the bangle is reborn.

The Mineral Water Standard

保養 (Bao Yang)

The most dangerous myth in the gemstone world is that you must place jadeite in direct sunlight to "recharge its energy." Baking jadeite in UV light permanently damages the structural integrity by aggressively drying out its internal water content.

Jadeite is a hydro-mineral. If you are not wearing the piece, it should be kept in a cool, dark environment. To properly maintain it, submerge it occasionally in pure, room-temperature mineral water. Hydration is the true source of its brilliance.

Curator's Notes: Reality FAQ

Can a broken jade bangle be repaired?

Yes. Using the Golden Renewal technique (金鑲玉), master jewelers craft articulated 18k gold hinges and internal rivets to securely reconnect the broken segments, giving the piece a second life.

Should I put my jadeite in the sun to recharge it?

Absolutely not. Baking jadeite in direct sunlight dries out its internal moisture and causes lasting damage. Jadeite should be kept hydrated with pure water and worn against the skin.

Why does jade change color when you wear it?

Due to its micro-crystalline porosity, daily wear allows the stone to absorb human skin lipids. This slowly increases its translucency over time, causing the colors to appear more vibrant.
